Best Auckland day trips in summer

Omaha

50 minutes from Auckland City
Just a skip, hop and a jump from Auckland you’ll find a long stretch of the whitest sand and clearest water. Infamously known for its multi-million dollar holiday homes, Omaha is surprisingly laid-back. Get a surf lesson, paddle up the estuary, visit a vineyard, or explore the rock pools in low tide. The adventure playground at nearby Matakana Country Park is always a hit with kids on the way home.

Mangawhai

80 minutes from Auckland City
The self-proclaimed ‘Magical Mangawhai’ really is just that. The beach is popular with surfers, or head to the estuary for a relaxing swim or kayak below the sand dunes. After all the activities, grab a well deserved wine at vineyards Te Whai Bay, Millars or Lochiel. Enjoy lunch in the courtyard and an essential visit to the chocolate shop at Bennetts cafe. Mangawhai is one of those Auckland day trips with something for everyone.

Karekare Beach

60 minutes from Auckland City
A quieter alternative to the famous Piha, Karekare offers the same rugged terrain and breathtaking landscape. You might even recognise the scenery from movies including ‘The Piano’. Don’t forget your jandals – the black sand can be scorching.
Once you’ve ticked off the beach, Karekare falls is well worth a visit too.

 Goat Island

60 minutes from Auckland City
New Zealand’s first marine reserve, established 1975, is the perfect place for kids to experience marine life. Simply step into the water to watch schools of friendly fish frolicking at your feet. Take a mask and snorkel to explore the deeper water. If you prefer to experience the mystery of the ocean without getting wet, the glass bottom boat offers a 45-minute eco tour or visit the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre. Goat Island can be easily combined with an Auckland day trip to Omaha.

Cheltenham

30 minutes from Auckland City
You don’t even need to leave the big smoke to experience sand between your toes and some fresh, salty air. Often named Auckland’s best beach, Cheltenham on the North Shore has calm waters and an iconic view of Rangitoto Island. Head up the hill to explore the historic military tunnels at North Head. Then indulge in a salted caramel gelato at the Cheltenham Milk Bar. You can even skip the traffic and catch the ferry from Auckland City.

Blue Spring

2.5 hours from Auckland City
Not quite beach weather? Get out your sneakers and pack the muesli bars for the Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway. The water is so pure it supplies around 60% of New Zealand’s bottled water, and weaves through stunning native bush worthy of a hobbit scene. Choose from a walk of 1.5hours each way, starting from Whites Road, or 15 minutes each way, from Leslie Road.
